India is projected to be a US$ 5 trillion economy by 2025 and is currently the third largest economy in terms of purchasing power parity. With this, India has become the centre stage of global attention and is expected to become a major driver of the global economy in the coming years. Playing a proactive role in India’s development process, Indian industry has been a major force in this journey.
During India’s economic liberalisation in 1990s, the Confederation of Indian Industry initiated a global platform to exchange best ideas and shape India for the future. To enunciate this emerging “New India” phenomenon as well as its role as a global growth engine in the new world economic order, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) conceived The Partnership Summit.
The Partnership Summit started in 1995 to mark the centenary year of CII, with the inaugural edition being held in Kolkata, CII’s birthplace, with the then Prime Minister of India, Shri PV Narasimha Rao as the chief guest. Over the last 25 years, the Summit has established itself as an ideal platform for business networking and for key stakeholders to develop best strategies and policies for improving competitiveness and integrating better into the globalized world.
The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, India, has been a consistent partner in the Summit. The convention in the last 24 years has travelled around India, being hosted by states keen to attract global investor attention. The first time it was held in the commercial capital, Mumbai, was in 1996 with Canada as the Partner Country. It is fitting that in its 25th year, it returns to this metropolis.
While the Summit has always had the presence of India’s Minister for Commerce and Industry and the Chief Minister of the host state every year, it has also hosted many Heads of State and Government from around the world.
The Summit features Heads of States, Ministers, senior government officials, policymakers, CEOs, academicians and thought leaders from all over the world.. The Partnership Summit 2018 engaged over 4,000 delegates from India and 50 other countries including Bangladesh, Japan, Myanmar, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Spain, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Thailand, United Arab Emirates and Zambia.
The host states have immensely benefited from this convention in terms of trade and investment. So far, West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh have hosted this Summit.

CII has worked with the Government to create, channelize and strengthen the growth drivers that would ensure an equitable and inclusive trajectory for India’s development. With over 24 years of active engagement and collaboration of India with the rest of the world, the Summit has established itself as an ideal ground for business networking and sharing of societal concerns.
