Among the most awaited conferences of the year, the CII Annual Session 2018 is all set to spark new ideas and perspectives on the future of India. To be held on 8-9 April 2018 at New Delhi, this year’s Session promises to be a vibrant and thought-provoking meeting place of the best minds in the country.
The year gone by
The Indian economy in the past year witnessed many significant and transformational changes. These included the introduction of the landmark Goods and Services Tax (GST), a single, unified and simpler indirect tax regime, India’s 30 places jump to the top 100 in World Bank’s Doing Business Rankings and many important reforms on various fronts including foreign direct investments, bank recapitalization, and MSMEs. As India approaches its 75th year of Independence in 2022, these reforms have indeed set India on a path of transformation.
With global economies and markets recovering, higher global growth is expected during 2018-19. This also has placed the Indian economic outlook on a positive trajectory, with the GDP forecasted to grow at 7.4% in 2018 and even higher, at 7.8% in 2019, as per IMF estimates.
Additionally, the Indian economy also performed well in terms of quarterly GDP estimates as it achieved a growth rate of 7.2%, a five quarter high, during the third quarter (Oct-Dec), 2017 in contrast to 6.5% in the previous quarter, according to Central Statistics Office’s (CSO) second advance estimates. With this, India also reclaimed its tag of the world’s fastest growing economy.
Today, the Indian economy is set on a higher and sustained growth path and is expected to become a $5 trillion economy by 2025.
To realize the aspirational growth targets, the imperatives for the Indian economy in the coming year are many and wide-ranging, including improving the quality of primary education, doubling of farm incomes, and sustainability and climate change, among many others. Indian Industry will be the foremost catalyst in India’s growth journey and would drive the development momentum for the country.
Building a Better India Together: Responsible, Inclusive and Ahead
The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) works closely with the Government on various policy issues and creates an environment conducive for growth and sustainable development. CII plays a critical role in all dimensions of the country. Continuing on this partnership, CII addressed many of the national challenges during 2017-18 under the theme “Building a Better India Together: Responsible, Inclusive and Ahead”.

The Annual Session brings together diverse stakeholders and some of the top thought-leaders in the country from all walks of life including ministers, top government officials, industry heads, academics, media personalities, and leaders in different fields such as literature and sports, among others who would deliberate on solutions for India’s future.
Apart from discussing the current economic situation, the sessions would brainstorm on policy priorities and structural reforms related to infrastructure, human development, agriculture and trade, as well as other areas. The annual meet would go beyond business and would focus on emerging opportunities for the Indian youth, women and weaker sections of the society. Varied and important topics such as Indian trade policies, better governance, building an India together, delivering better justice etc. would be some of the topics to be discussed.
